Chapter 9
The God in Disguise
The beggar reveals his true form: a powerful Chinese deity. He explains his reasons for the disguise, perhaps a trial for Mei, a prophecy, or a divine mission. Mei is left reeling, her world turned upside down by this extraordinary truth.
The air in their humble abode, usually thick with the scent of damp earth and the lingering aroma of their meager meals, now hummed with an energy that prickled Mei’s skin. It was a sensation both exhilarating and terrifying, like standing on the precipice of a storm. Her husband, the man she had known only as a quiet, unassuming beggar, was no longer the stooped figure hunched by the hearth. His face, once etched with the weariness of a thousand roads, was now serene, his features sharp and noble, his eyes – those same kind, knowing eyes she had come to depend on – blazed with an ancient fire. Mei’s breath hitched. This was not the man she had married, and yet, it was.
“You… you are not…” she stammered, her voice a mere whisper against the sudden, profound silence. The words died on her lips, inadequate to grasp the immensity of what stood before her.
