The air in the village, once thick with the comforting aroma of woodsmoke and simmering stews, began to carry a different scent. It was a scent Mei couldn't quite place, metallic and cold, like rain on forgotten iron. A creeping unease settled over Willow Creek, a subtle shift in the rhythm of their days, like a drumbeat faltering. It started with small things, easily dismissed as ill luck. Old Man Hemlock’s prize rooster, the one with the iridescent tail feathers, was found lifeless in its coop, not a feather ruffled, no mark upon its throat. Then, Widow Anya’s carefully tended herb garden, the one that had defied the dry spell, withered overnight, its vibrant green turning to a brittle, ash-like brown.

Mei noticed it first in the hushed conversations that drifted from the market stalls, the lowered voices and exchanged glances that spoke of something more than coincidence. Her husband, the man she’d married in a desperate act of self-preservation, seemed more watchful. His usual placid gaze, which had always held a depth she couldn't fathom, now held a sharper edge, a vigilance that made her skin prickle. He still wore the same patched rags, still ate the same meager portions, but the stillness about him was no longer one of weary acceptance. It was the stillness of a predator, coiled and alert.

One evening, as the sun bled across the horizon in shades of bruised plum and fading gold, Mei sat by the hearth, mending a tear in her husband’s tunic. The silence between them was usually companionable, filled with the crackle of the fire and the distant chirping of crickets. Tonight, however, it felt charged, expectant. Her husband, who had been staring into the flames, his face cast in flickering shadows, finally spoke, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate in the very stones of their small cottage.
