Chapter 6
The Elder's Cryptic Words
Elder Li, the village mystic, observes Mei and her husband with knowing eyes. He speaks in riddles, hinting at ancient prophecies and destinies intertwined. His words plant seeds of doubt and curiosity in Mei's mind about the man she married.
The midday sun beat down on the dusty village square, a relentless hammer forging heat into the very stones. Mei, her hands roughened by endless chores, paused to wipe a bead of sweat from her brow. Her husband, the beggar she had wed out of desperation and a whisper of a forgotten dream, sat on the stoop of their humble dwelling, his eyes closed as if lost in contemplation. His gaze, sharp and surprisingly clear for his advanced age, swept over the square, finally settling on Mei and her husband. A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips.
He approached them, his staff tapping a soft rhythm against the parched earth. Mei bowed her head respectfully, a knot of apprehension tightening in her stomach. Elder Li’s pronouncements were rarely straightforward, often laced with riddles that left the villagers pondering for days.
