The scent of jasmine, once a distant, tantalizing whisper carried on the night breeze, now clung to Mei’s chambers with the suffocating intensity of a forgotten dream. It was a fragrance that belonged to celestial gardens, to moonlit pavilions, to a realm utterly divorced from the chipped porcelain bowls and the rough-spun blankets that defined her days. She traced the rim of a teacup, the delicate, almost translucent porcelain cool beneath her fingertips. It was a gift from him, of course. One of the few tangible remnants of the world he inhabited when the beggar’s rags were shed, when the grime of the streets dissolved like mist under a rising sun.

He was there, in the adjoining room, his presence a steady, silent hum that vibrated through the very walls of their modest home. Sometimes, when the moonlight slanted just so through the paper windows, she could see the silhouette of his form, impossibly still, as if carved from obsidian. He would sit for hours, his gaze fixed on something only he could perceive, a quiet sentinel against the encroaching dark. But how could she bridge the chasm that now yawned between them? How could a woman who had known only the grit of poverty, the gnawing pangs of hunger, and the weary resignation of a life unlived, stand beside a being whose very essence pulsed with the power of creation and destruction?

The realization had settled upon her like a shroud, heavy and inescapable. He was not merely a man with hidden talents, as she had begun to suspect in the weeks following their bewildering union. He was a god. Not a benevolent spirit of hearth and home, but a celestial entity whose name was whispered in hushed reverence by mortals and feared by lesser beings. The stories Elder Li had woven, the cryptic pronouncements that had once seemed like the ramblings of an old man, now echoed with terrifying clarity in her mind. The ‘Dragon’s Breath,’ the ‘Guardian of the Celestial Gate’ – these were not metaphors. They were titles.
