The world outside my window was a kaleidoscope of vibrant green, a stark contrast to the muted shades of my inner landscape. Jamaica, even in its most ordinary moments, pulsed with a life that felt both exhilarating and alien. I was a child adrift, a tiny boat tossed on waves of feeling I couldn't quite name. The whispers that followed me, the sidelong glances, the way grown-ups’ voices would hush when I entered a room – they were the soundtrack to my existence. It was a symphony of "otherness," a melody I was learning to hum even as it ached in my bones.

My father’s house was not a home. It was a place where I existed, a shadow flitting through sparsely furnished rooms. The air was thick with unspoken rules and a palpable tension that made my small chest feel tight. My father was a man of few words, his presence a heavy silence that offered no comfort. My aunts and uncles moved through the house with a quiet efficiency, their eyes rarely meeting mine. They were like characters in a play I hadn’t been cast in, performing their roles with practiced detachment. I learned to make myself small, to occupy as little space as possible, to become invisible. It was a survival tactic, honed by necessity.
