The air in my small apartment, usually a sanctuary, felt thick with the ghosts of rejection. They swirled around me like dust motes caught in a sunbeam, invisible yet undeniably present. Chapter 14 had been about setting boundaries, about building that fragile fortress around my heart, but today, the walls felt paper-thin. It was a Tuesday, a day like any other, yet the familiar ache of being unwanted had settled deep in my bones.

I was folding laundry, the mundane rhythm of the task usually a comfort. But as I smoothed out a worn t-shirt, a memory, sharp and unwelcome, pierced through the fabric. It was a memory of my mother, her face a mask of impatience as she tossed aside a drawing I’d made, a vibrant splash of color on a crumpled piece of paper. “What is this nonsense?” she’d said, her voice devoid of warmth. “Focus on what matters.” What mattered, to her, was never what mattered to me.

A sigh escaped my lips, heavy with the years of unanswered questions. Why? Why had her love always felt so out of reach? Was I not good enough? Was I too much? The questions had been my constant companions, whispering doubts in the quiet hours, fueling the endless search for validation. Even now, in the safety of my own space, with a life I had painstakingly built, the echo of her disapproval could still sting.
