The air in my small apartment, once a sanctuary, now felt heavy with unspoken words. The phone call with my mother had left a familiar ache, a dull throb beneath my ribs. It was the same ache I’d carried for as long as I could remember, a constant companion in my journey. Each interaction, even the briefest, was a re-treading of old ground, a dance of hope and disappointment. I’d hung up the phone, the dial tone a stark reminder of the distance that wasn’t just geographical, but deeply etched into our shared history.

I walked over to the window, the city lights blurring into streaks of color through the misty pane. The rain had started again, a soft patter against the glass, mirroring the gentle rhythm of my own breath. For so long, my life had been about reaching out, about trying to bridge the chasm that separated me from the love I craved. I’d stretched my hands across oceans, across years, yearning for my mother’s embrace, for a flicker of recognition in her eyes. But the chasm remained, vast and unyielding.

It was during those quiet moments, staring out at the indifferent city, that the words of my grandmother echoed. “You are strong, little blossom,” she’d said, her voice a warm balm on my soul. “Stronger than you know. And your strength comes from within.” Her words, a precious heirloom, had been my anchor in the roughest seas. But even anchors could be tested.
