The air in the small apartment, usually thick with the scent of old books and my mother’s faint perfume, felt different tonight. It hummed with an unspoken tension, a static charge that prickled my skin. I sat across from her, the worn floral fabric of the armchair pressing into my back, my hands clasped so tightly my knuckles were white. The silence stretched, a vast, empty space between us, filled only by the ticking of the unseen clock on the mantelpiece. I had rehearsed this moment a thousand times in my mind, each rendition ending with the same hopeful, yet fragile, yearning for acceptance.
“Mama,” I began, my voice barely a whisper, a fragile bird taking flight. She turned her head, her gaze, usually so sharp and critical, held a flicker of something I couldn’t quite decipher. Was it confusion? Weariness? Or was it simply the reflection of my own desperate hope?
“Yes, Dainty?” Her voice was cool, measured, the same tone she used when discussing the weather or the grocery list. It was a tone that built walls, not bridges.
