I’d pull on the uniform of invisibility I’d perfected over years – a loose shirt, worn jeans – and step out into the cool morning air. I’d stare out the window, watching the buildings blur into streaks of color, trying to absorb the pulse of this new land.

I learned to anticipate the needs of the customers, to offer a smile that felt both genuine and practiced, to move with an efficiency that masked the tremor in my hands. Every dollar earned was a victory, a small but significant piece added to the foundation of my independence. I’d count them at the end of the day, the crisp bills a tangible testament to my own strength. It wasn’t the easy comfort of being provided for, but it was a different kind of wealth, a earned pride that settled deep in my bones.
