Chapter 9
Waking the Magic
Escaping her captor, the woman returns to her roots. The wardrobe doors creak open, and the dresses emerge, no longer timid. They are ready to reveal their true purpose.
The air outside was so thick with the scent of damp earth and pine needles that it felt like breathing in a forest. It was a scent so alien, so wonderfully *real*, that it made the woman’s knees wobble. She hadn’t breathed air like this in… well, she couldn’t remember. The wicked woman’s house had smelled perpetually of dust and regret, a stale perfume that clung to everything like a shroud. But this, this was life. This was green. This was *freedom*.
She stood on the threshold of a place that felt both like a forgotten dream and a brand-new beginning. The ancient oak tree loomed, its branches gnarled like the fingers of a wise old storyteller. This was where her story had begun, before the shadows had been invited in, before laughter had been banished. And here, waiting, was the wardrobe. It wasn’t the grand, imposing piece of furniture that had once dominated her childhood prison. This was smaller, nestled amongst the roots of the oak, its wood weathered and softened by time, its doors ajar as if beckoning her closer.
A shiver, not of fear but of anticipation, traced its way down her spine. This was it. The moment she had both dreaded and longed for. The moment the carefully constructed walls within her heart, the ones that had kept the magic contained, had to crumble. She reached out a trembling hand, her fingers brushing against the rough, splintered wood. The doors swung open further, with a soft, resonant creak that sounded like a sigh of relief.
