The silence in the house was a heavy cloak, thick and suffocating. The Wicked Woman’s pronouncements, sharp as shards of glass, had long since ceased. Now, only the oppressive quiet remained, punctuated by the child’s own shallow breaths. She sat by the window, her small hands pressed against the cold pane, tracing patterns that the dust motes danced through. The world outside was a blur of muted greens and greys, a landscape that offered no comfort, no explanation for the gnawing ache in her chest.

Then, a shimmer. Not the dull glow of the weak sun, but a bright, ethereal luminescence that seemed to spill from the very air. It coalesced, spinning and swirling, until it settled into the form of a dress. This one was spun from starlight, a delicate silver fabric that seemed to hold the vastness of the night sky within its folds. Tiny, twinkling constellations were embroidered across its bodice, and as it moved, it chimed with the softest, most melodic of sounds.

The child watched, her eyes wide. The blue dress had spoken for her, the black dress had absorbed her sorrow, the emerald dress had stood guard, and the golden dress had held them all together. But this dress… this dress felt different. It wasn’t just a comfort or a protector; it was a question.
