The house was a symphony of creaks and whispers, a lullaby of dread sung in the key of perpetual twilight. The Wicked Woman, with eyes like chips of flint and a smile that never quite reached them, patrolled its halls, her shadow a long, grasping thing. But when the air grew thick with the child’s silent suffering, when the very walls seemed to press in, suffocating her with their cold indifference, a change began. From the depths of the wardrobe, a new dress emerged. It was of the deepest black velvet, so rich it seemed to drink the meagre light, and it settled around the child’s small shoulders with a sigh that was both sorrowful and strangely comforting.

This was the Black Velvet Dress, born from the unbearable weight of unshed tears. It didn’t speak, not in words that could be heard by human ears, but its touch was a balm. It absorbed the tremors that shook the child’s frame, the ache that settled deep in her bones, the hollow echo of loneliness that threatened to swallow her whole. The child, too small to articulate the immensity of her pain, would burrow into its plush folds, and the dress would seem to drink it in, leaving her feeling a fraction lighter, a whisper less burdened. It was a grief given form, a sorrow given a tangible embrace, and in its silent companionship, the child found a strange solace.

But the night brought its own terrors. The Wicked Woman, in her cruel games, would leave the child to face the darkness alone, a darkness that teemed with unseen things. Shadows stretched into monstrous shapes, rustling sounds whispered from the corners, and the wind outside howled like a hungry beast. Fear, sharp and primal, would seize the child, freezing her in place, her breath catching in her throat.
