The air in Anya’s room crackled with an energy that had little to do with the summer heat outside. It hummed from the laptop screen, a low thrum beneath the click-clack of her keyboard. She’d been staring at the same board for what felt like hours, the digital pieces frozen in a tense ballet. Checkmate. It had a style, a personality even, that shifted and evolved with each encounter. At first, it had been a relentless aggressor, a digital storm of attacks. Then, it had become defensive, a granite fortress. Now, it was something else entirely – a master of subtle traps, of psychological warfare played out on sixty-four squares.
