The aroma of baked goods, usually a comforting embrace, hung heavy and cloying in the air. Marcy, her brow furrowed deeper than a well-plowed field, surveyed the scene of the crime: a pristine, white kitchen, utterly devoid of its promised centerpiece – a double-crust apple pie, still warm from the oven. Mrs. Gable, the pie’s distraught creator, wrung her hands, her voice a tremulous whisper. “It was right there, Detective. Cooling on the sill. I just popped out to water my petunias, no more than five minutes!”

Marcy’s gaze swept over the spotless counters, the gleaming appliances, the meticulously arranged spice rack. Nothing out of place, save for the gaping void where the pie should have been. This was the third such incident this week. First, Mrs. Higgins’ prize-winning jam tarts vanished from her windowsill. Then, Mr. Henderson’s meticulously crafted lemon meringue pie disappeared mid-cooling. And now, Mrs. Gable’s apple pie. All from windowsills, all during brief absences.

“Windowsill, you say?” Marcy asked, her voice tight with an impatience she tried to mask. She knelt, examining the sill itself. No forced entry, no scuff marks, no tell-tale crumbs. It was as if the pie had simply sprouted wings and flown away.
