The garden gnome had vanished. Not just misplaced, but *vanished*, as if the very earth had swallowed it whole. Marcy stood on Mrs. Gable’s meticulously manicured lawn, her gaze sweeping over the vibrant petunias and the impossibly green grass. The gnome, a portly fellow with a rosy-cheeked grin and a fishing rod perpetually poised, had been a fixture by the birdbath for nearly a decade. Now, only a circular imprint in the soft soil remained, a ghostly echo of its presence.

“Are you absolutely sure it didn’t just… wander off, Mrs. Gable?” Marcy asked, her voice laced with a weariness that had become her constant companion. The teacups, the vanished garden gnome – it was all beginning to blur into a single, exhausting haze.

Mrs. Gable wrung her hands, her floral-print apron rustling like a distressed bird. “Wander off? My Bartholomew? He’s a gnome, dear. Gnomes don’t *wander*. They stand. They guard. And Bartholomew was guarding this patch of petunias with his very soul, I assure you.” Her voice quivered, and Marcy felt a familiar pang of guilt. She was supposed to be the one to bring order to these small, domestic chaos, not make them worse.
