The late afternoon sun, usually a welcome guest in Marcy’s cramped office, felt more like an intruder. It slanted across her desk, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, a silent testament to the neglect of her surroundings. Papers were piled precariously, not just on her desk, but on the floor, creating miniature Everest ranges of unsolved cases. Yet, Marcy herself was remarkably… calm.

She wasn’t humming, or tapping her pen, or staring intensely at a corkboard covered in a dizzying web of string and photos. Instead, she was sketching. Not a suspect, not a clue, but a rather lopsided robin perched on a branch. The scent of lukewarm coffee, a relic of a forgotten morning, mingled with the faint, lingering aroma of Mrs. Higgins’s lavender potpourri, a souvenir from the last of the truly mundane mysteries.

The teacup case, the one that had started it all, felt like a lifetime ago. The chipped Willow pattern, the missing saucer, the frantic accusations. It had been a whirlwind of exhaustion and stubborn self-reliance, a frantic race against an imaginary clock that ticked only in Marcy’s own head. She’d pushed everyone away, especially Officer Davies, whose well-meaning offers of assistance had been met with a frost that could curdle milk.
