The last of the recovered teacups, a delicate Limoges with a hand-painted robin, was carefully placed back onto Mrs. Higgins’ lace doily. The elderly woman, beaming, dabbed at her eyes with a lavender-scented handkerchief. “Oh, Detective Marcy, I simply don’t know how to thank you enough. My entire collection, safe and sound. And to think it was all… well, rather silly, really.”

Marcy offered a tired but genuine smile. “Not silly at all, Mrs. Higgins. Every case deserves attention. Especially when it involves such beautiful craftsmanship.” She glanced around the meticulously kept parlor, a stark contrast to the chaotic evidence locker she’d been excavating mere hours ago. The ‘conspiracy,’ as Sterling had so dramatically termed it, had unraveled with surprising speed once she’d finally stopped trying to be a one-woman wrecking crew.

It had started, as so many things did, with a missing item. Not a diamond necklace, or a priceless artifact, but a set of antique teacups belonging to Mrs. Higgins. Marcy, still smarting from her initial dismissal of the case as beneath her, had thrown herself into it with her usual ferocity. She’d interviewed the neighbours, dusted for fingerprints on porcelain that hadn't seen a human touch in weeks, and interrogated the local pigeon population with an intensity that had sent Officer Davies scurrying for cover.
