Sterling reveals a personal connection to the organization, explaining his vested interest in Marcy's success and his own past failures.
The air in Detective Sterling’s office was thick with the scent of stale pipe tobacco and something vaguely floral, like potpourri that had seen better decades. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the grimy window, illuminating a landscape of overflowing ashtrays, precariously stacked case files, and a collection of what Marcy could only describe as “curios.” A chipped ceramic cat with one eye missing sat sentinel on a pile of newspapers, while a tarnished silver locket lay nestled amongst a scattering of what looked like antique buttons. It was a chaotic symphony of an office, a stark contrast to Marcy’s own meticulously organized, albeit perpetually cluttered, desk.
Marcy sat stiffly on the edge of a worn leather armchair, her knuckles white where she gripped the arms. She had been summoned, an unusual occurrence, as Sterling typically preferred to communicate through cryptic notes or the occasional, unsettlingly direct stare across the precinct. She’d expected a lecture, perhaps a thinly veiled criticism of her methods, but Sterling, perched on the edge of his own desk, was surprisingly subdued. He was fiddling with a small, intricately carved wooden bird, turning it over and over in his gnarled fingers.
“You’re doing well, Marcy,” he began, his voice a gravelly rumble that seemed to emanate from the very depths of his tweed jacket. “Very well indeed. You have the fire. The… relentless pursuit.”
