The gnome, once a proud sentinel of Mrs. Higgins’ prize-winning petunias, now sat forlornly on Marcy’s desk, its painted smile chipped and one eye askew. Beside it, a smear of what was undoubtedly raspberry filling, meticulously preserved in a plastic evidence bag, served as a grim reminder of the Case of the Pilfered Pastry. These were the breadcrumbs, the so-called ‘mundane mysteries’ that had led Marcy down a rabbit hole so deep she was starting to suspect her own sanity. While you’re busy looking at the sparkly handkerchief, the rabbit’s already in the hat.”

Marcy sighed, rubbing her temples. The fluorescent lights of the precinct seemed to hum with a malevolent intent, amplifying the dull ache behind her eyes. She’d been running on fumes for weeks, fueled by lukewarm coffee and an unyielding stubbornness. Sterling’s cryptic pronouncements, once an annoyance, were now the only coherent threads in the unraveling tapestry of her investigation.
