The air in Detective Sterling’s cluttered office was thick with the scent of stale pipe tobacco and something vaguely floral, like potpourri that had seen better days. Sunlight, filtered through a window grimy with the accumulated dust of a thousand solved and unsolved cases, slanted across a desk piled high with case files, stray chess pieces, and a peculiar collection of antique thimbles. He paused, taking a slow sip of his tea, his gaze fixed on some unseen point beyond the grimy window. "I was young, brimming with the certainty that only a fledgling detective can possess. Every case was a personal affront to my intellect, a puzzle I alone was destined to solve."
