The stale air of the precinct office hung heavy, thick with the scent of lukewarm coffee and unspoken frustrations. Marcy, perched precariously on the edge of her desk, chewed on the end of a pencil, her brow furrowed in concentration. The case of the missing gnome had been solved, a surprisingly straightforward affair involving a territorial badger and a misplaced garden fork. But even as she’d filed the report, a gnawing dissatisfaction had settled in her gut. It was the feeling of a loose thread, a single misplaced stitch in an otherwise perfectly woven tapestry.

Officer Davies, bless his well-meaning heart, hovered nearby, fiddling with a stack of stray case files. "Anything, Marcy? That missing mailbag from Elm Street is getting a real spotlight. Chief’s breathing down my neck."

Marcy waved a dismissive hand, not even looking up. "Mailbag? Davies, we’re talking about a potential international incident here, and you’re worried about junk mail. Focus."
