The scent of ozone and desperation clung to the air like cheap cologne. Mia adjusted the ill-fitting, sequined chef’s hat perched precariously on her head, a grimace twisting her lips. Beside her, Marcus, resplendent in a garish pink jumpsuit that was supposed to be a waiter’s uniform, beamed with an almost alarming level of enthusiasm.

“Doesn’t this just scream ‘sophisticated interstellar soirée,’ Mia?” Marcus whispered, his voice a low rumble of excitement. He gestured with a flourish, nearly toppling a stack of what appeared to be self-folding napkins.

Mia shot him a withering look. “It screams ‘desperate attempt to blend in with questionable taste.’ Frankly, Marcus, I’m more concerned about the structural integrity of this entire operation than the fashion choices.”
