Marcus hummed a jaunty tune, a slightly off-key rendition of a song he’d heard on a late-night infomercial about vacuum-sealed space food. He tapped his pen against the worn surface of his notepad, the ink smudging a little under his enthusiastic grip. The feather, a single, iridescent plume of impossible violet, lay nestled on a pristine white handkerchief on the table between him and Mia. It was the last tangible clue they had, a whisper from the thief that had vanished like stardust.

“You know, Mia,” he began, his voice brimming with that particular brand of boundless optimism that often made Mia’s eye twitch, “this feather… it’s not just *any* feather, is it?”

Mia, meticulously sketching a diagram of the museum’s ventilation system, didn’t look up. “No, Marcus. It’s a feather from a hypothetical Martian bird. A bird that, according to the curator, doesn’t exist. Hence, the thief is likely not a local ornithologist with a penchant for the theatrical.” Her tone was dry, each word precisely placed like a perfectly aimed dart.
