Chapter 19
The Exploding Edible
As they dig into their celebratory dessert, the miniature rocket ship on top of the sundae unexpectedly sputters and launches, showering them in whipped cream and sprinkles. It's a perfectly chaotic, fittingly comedic conclusion to their Martian MacGuffin misadventure.
The air in Mia and Marcus’s cramped office hummed with the sweet, syrupy scent of victory. Or, more accurately, the scent of two extra-large, space-themed ice cream sundaes, piled high with whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and a generous dusting of edible glitter. The Cosmic Chronometer, now safely back in its reinforced, museum-grade display case, had been a challenge, a whirlwind, and, as far as Mia was concerned, a stark reminder of why she meticulously cataloged every stray hair and errant crumb.
Marcus, on the other hand, was practically vibrating with post-adventure glee. His sundae, a towering Everest of vanilla bean and cosmic caramel swirl, was already sporting a small, perfectly formed crater from his enthusiastic spoon. “Mia, isn’t this just *divine*?” he exclaimed, his voice muffled by a mouthful of whipped cream. “I mean, we faced down a flamboyant alien smuggler, navigated a time loop, and all before lunch! Well, technically, it’s after lunch, but you know what I mean. The thrill of it all!”
Mia offered a small, tight smile, carefully dissecting a particularly stubborn chunk of chocolate fudge. Her own sundae, a more demure affair of lavender ice cream and stardust sprinkles, was still largely intact. She’d learned long ago that Marcus’s enthusiasm was a force of nature, best observed from a safe, well-planned distance. “It was… an experience, Marcus. And ‘divine’ is a strong word for something that involved nearly being turned into a human pretzel by Zorp’s malfunctioning intergalactic vacuum cleaner.”
