Barty's Bewildered Blessing
They encounter Barty one last time, who interprets their successful return as proof of his theories, albeit with a few wildly inaccurate additions. He thanks them for 'saving the planet from alien Jell-O' and offers them a slightly radioactive piece of tinfoil as a token of his gratitude.
The hum of the city, a familiar symphony of distant sirens and rumbling traffic, washed over Mia and Marcus as they stepped out of the now-empty taxi. The Cosmic Chronometer, nestled safely in its specially designed, heavily padded case, felt like a warm, humming secret against Marcus’s chest. Earth. It was good to be back on solid, gravity-bound ground. The scent of exhaust fumes and blooming jasmine, a decidedly terrestrial perfume, filled Mia’s lungs. She allowed herself a small, almost imperceptible sigh of relief.
“Well, that was… an adventure,” Marcus declared, his voice still buzzing with the adrenaline of their escape. He bounced on the balls of his feet, a wide, goofy grin plastered across his face. “I still can’t believe we managed to outsmart Zorp. And the time loop! That was *chef’s kiss* brilliant, Mia. Pure genius.”
Mia offered a tight-lipped smile, her gaze sweeping across the bustling street. Her mind, however, was already filing away details: the subtle shimmer of the Chronometer’s containment field, the lingering scent of ozone from Zorp’s malfunctioning temporal displacement unit, the sheer audacity of their disguise. “Luck, Marcus. Mostly luck, and a healthy dose of Zorp’s own overconfidence. And perhaps a small sprinkle of my own genius, if we’re being entirely honest.”
