They return the Cosmic Chronometer to the relieved museum authorities, who are too stunned by its recovery to question the slightly singed state of the detectives' attire. The case is officially closed, leaving Mia and Marcus to reflect on their extraordinary adventure.
The whirring of the dematerialization beam faded, leaving Mia and Marcus blinking in the familiar, if slightly dusty, reception area of the Metropolitan Museum of Antiquities. The air, thick with the scent of old paper and even older anxieties, felt blessedly Earth-bound. Behind them, the shimmering portal snapped shut with a sound like a champagne cork popping, leaving no trace of their interstellar escapade.
Mia smoothed down her now-singed catering uniform, a faint aroma of burnt space-shrimp clinging to the fabric. Beside her, Marcus, whose own uniform bore a suspicious scorch mark near the epaulet, was practically vibrating with residual adrenaline. He was clutching the Cosmic Chronometer, nestled in a hastily repurposed velvet-lined box that had once held a particularly ostentatious alien canapé. The artifact itself, a gleaming orb of intricate Martian metal, pulsed with a faint, internal light, as if still humming with the echoes of Zorp’s ill-fated grand ambitions.
“Well,” Mia said, her voice a low rumble that was remarkably steady given the circumstances. “That was… an experience.”
