Chapter 13

Chaotic Chase Through the Cosmos

With the artifact secured, Mia and Marcus make their escape, initiating a chaotic chase through Zorp's space station. They outmaneuver Zorp's bewildered guards, utilizing Zorp's own malfunctioning tech against them, leading to a spectacular, albeit accidental, self-destruction of Zorp's security systems.

The air in Zorp’s opulent control room crackled with the aftermath of temporal distortion. Mia, clutching the surprisingly heavy Cosmic Chronometer, felt a dizzying sense of déjà vu, a sensation that had been amplified tenfold by Marcus’s accidental activation of the artifact. The brief, jarring loop had, however, provided them with the precious seconds they needed. Zorp, momentarily frozen in a tableau of outrage, had been the perfect target for Mia’s quick thinking. A strategically deployed holographic projector, pilfered from a nearby console, now displayed a rather unflattering image of Zorp attempting to sing opera in a vacuum. The guards, a collection of vaguely humanoid beings with more limbs than sense, were too busy pointing and sputtering in what Mia assumed was their native tongue of bewildered amusement to offer any real resistance.

"Marcus, now!" Mia hissed, her voice tight with adrenaline. She didn't need to elaborate. Marcus, ever the enthusiast for a good chase, was already halfway to the escape pod hatch, a slightly singed space-chef hat perched jauntily on his head. He fumbled with the latch, his usual exuberance momentarily replaced by a frantic urgency. The Cosmic Chronometer pulsed softly in Mia’s arms, a reassuring weight that spoke of imminent success.

"Coming, coming!" Marcus yelped, his fingers finally finding the release. The hatch hissed open, revealing the cramped confines of their getaway vessel. It wasn't much – a repurposed cargo pod, smelling faintly of stale alien snacks and desperation – but it was theirs. Mia scrambled in, carefully placing the Chronometer into a padded compartment. Marcus followed, slamming the hatch shut just as a volley of poorly aimed laser blasts ricocheted off the hull.
