During a tense moment, as Mia attempts to subtly retrieve the artifact, Marcus, in his usual clumsy fashion, trips. His flailing hand accidentally activates the Cosmic Chronometer, unleashing a cascade of temporal distortions. Time itself seems to stutter and rewind.
Chapter 11
The air in Zorp’s opulent, if slightly gaudy, private lounge hummed with a dangerous sort of anticipation. Crystal decanters, filled with liquids that shimmered with impossible colors, lined a polished obsidian bar. The Cosmic Chronometer, nestled on a velvet pedestal, pulsed with a soft, ethereal glow, its intricate gears and celestial etchings a testament to its Martian origins. Mia, disguised in a surprisingly convincing (and slightly itchy) server’s uniform, felt a prickle of unease. Every calculated step she’d taken, every blandly polite question about canapés, had led her to this precipice. Marcus, bless his eternally optimistic heart, was attempting to distract Zorp with a rambling monologue about the philosophical implications of artisanal space-cheese, his eyes darting nervously between the alien smuggler and the artifact.
“And you see,” Marcus was saying, his voice a little too loud, a little too enthusiastic, “the subtle interplay between the crystalline structure of the Gorgonian Gorgonzola and its inherent gravitational pull… it’s truly groundbreaking. Almost as groundbreaking as, say, a device that can… manipulate time.” He winked, a gesture lost on the perpetually self-absorbed Zorp.
