They reach the main auction hall, a spectacle of gaudy alien decor and wealthy, morally flexible bidders. The Cosmic Chronometer is displayed prominently, radiating an otherworldly glow. Zorp, resplendent in a sequined jumpsuit, prepares to commence the bidding, oblivious to the impending disruption.

The air inside Zorp's Grand Gala was thick with the cloying scent of something vaguely like fermented starfruit and the hum of a thousand alien conversations. Mia, adjusting the ill-fitting chef's hat that threatened to slide over her eyes, felt a bead of sweat trickle down her temple. Beside her, Marcus, equally swathed in a stiff, slightly-too-small catering uniform, vibrated with a nervous energy that threatened to shatter the delicate illusion of their disguises.

"Remind me again," Mia whispered, her voice barely audible above the cacophony, "why we're dressed like intergalactic short-order cooks?"

Marcus, whose eyes were wide with a mixture of awe and apprehension, gestured vaguely at the opulent chaos surrounding them. "Because, my dear Mia, Zorp is a creature of habit. And his habit, apparently, is to conduct his illicit dealings at a 'Gala' of immense, and I must say, rather questionable, taste." He nudged a passing tray of what appeared to be glowing, gelatinous cubes with his elbow, narrowly avoiding a collision. "Besides," he added with a grin that didn't quite reach his eyes, "who would suspect the humble purveyors of lukewarm space-broth of being master detectives?"
