Lily ran her fingers over the faded leather of the journal, the scent of old paper filling her nostrils. The small, cramped space of the abandoned shack, illuminated by the flickering beam of Sam’s flashlight, felt both eerie and strangely cozy. Outside, the wind howled like a lonely wolf, but inside, a different kind of mystery was unfolding. She’d spent the last hour meticulously piecing together the ripped pages and scattered notes that Professor Alistair Finch, the vanished magician, had left behind. Tom, ever the restless guardian, paced near the doorway, his eyes darting into the shadows beyond, while Maya sat cross-legged by the hearth, carefully examining a peculiar, tarnished silver locket she’d found nestled in the ashes. Sam, meanwhile, was hunched over his tablet, trying to coax a signal from the dead zone they were in, occasionally muttering frustrated exclamations.

"It's not just about disappearing acts and rabbits from hats," Lily murmured, her brow furrowed in concentration. She held up a page filled with intricate diagrams that looked more like scientific blueprints than stage props. "He was… studying things. Not just how to make himself vanish, but how others did."

Tom stopped his pacing. "Others? You mean like Mrs. Gable, the baker?"
