The air inside the shack hung heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and forgotten things. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating a scene of disarray. Torn tapestries, once vibrant, sagged from the walls like weary ghosts. A rickety table, scarred with age, sat in the center of the room, its surface littered with what looked like the remnants of a hurried departure – a half-eaten apple, a quill pen, and a scattering of dried herbs.
Lily, her brow furrowed in concentration, ran a finger over the rough wood of the table. "It’s like he just… vanished. But not in a magic way. In a scared-away way."
Tom, ever the pragmatist, kicked at a loose floorboard. "Or he was taken. This place feels… wrong." A shiver traced its way down his spine, despite his outward bravado. He hated the way the shadows clung to the corners, the way the silence seemed to buzz with unspoken secrets.
