Deep within the woods, they discover a dilapidated shack. It seems deserted, but inside, they find more symbols and personal items belonging to the missing people, confirming their worst fears.
The trees pressed in, their branches clawing at the bruised twilight sky. What had started as a dazzling spectacle of smoke and mirrors had devolved into a chilling reality, each step deeper into the whispering woods a heavier weight on their hearts. Lily, usually so composed, found her breath catching in her throat with every rustle of leaves. Tom, his athletic build usually a source of confidence, kept glancing over his shoulder, the shadows seeming to stretch and twist into menacing shapes. Maya, her eyes wide and taking in every detail, clutched Lily’s arm, a silent tremor running through her. Sam, though he tried to maintain his usual lightheartedness, kept his flashlight beam darting nervously into the dense undergrowth.
The map, a smudged sketch found tucked beneath a loose floorboard in the abandoned campsite, had led them this far. It was crude, almost childlike, but the 'X' marked with a shaky hand was undeniable. And the faint, almost invisible trail they’d followed, barely more than a deer path, had finally opened into a small, overgrown clearing.
