A Trail in the Woods
The symbol leads them to the edge of a dense forest. Tom’s bravery is tested as they venture in, following faint tracks. The atmosphere grows ominous, and a sense of being watched descends.
The faded symbol, etched onto the back of the crumpled flyer, felt like a secret whispered only to them. Lily traced its intricate curves with her fingertip, a familiar thrill of puzzle-solving sparking within her. It was a symbol she’d seen before, not in a book, but in the rough, scrawled markings on the old oak tree at the edge of the woods behind her house. It was a place she usually avoided, a place her parents warned her about, full of shadows and tangled undergrowth. But now, it was the only lead they had.
"Are you sure?" Tom asked, his voice a little too loud, a little too eager. He bounced on the balls of his feet, his gaze fixed on the dark, imposing wall of trees that seemed to swallow the last rays of the afternoon sun. The air, even out here on the dusty road leading to the forest’s edge, felt cooler, heavier.
Lily nodded, her brow furrowed in concentration. "It's the same. I’m sure of it. It’s like a… a stylized bird, with its wings spread." She looked up at Maya, who was peering intently at the flyer, her head tilted.
