Dawn cast long shadows across the garden as we moved toward the main house. Harding led the way, his hand resting on the pistol at his hip. Seraphina walked beside me, her lantern still lit despite the growing light.
'If Arthur is behind this,' she said, her voice low, 'he's been planning for a while. I saw him yesterday with a leather case—maps, probably. He's been studying the estate.'
'He's a cartographer,' I replied. 'Maps are what we do.'
