Before me, Mike stood bathed in the sickly green glow emanating from the orb he clutched, a twisted mockery of the charm nestled in my own palm. His eyes, usually sharp and calculating, blazed with a fanatical light, reflecting the chaos he was so eager to unleash.

“You see, Bret,” Mike’s voice, usually a silken purr, was now a grating rasp, amplified by the power surging through him. “This world is broken. It craves order, a strong hand to guide it through the mire of its own weakness. The First Spell wasn't a failure; it was a *misunderstanding*. A timid beginning. I will finish what your ancestors started, but this time, with purpose. With dominion.”

The charm in my hand pulsed, a frantic heartbeat against my skin. It felt… alive, a desperate plea to be understood, not wielded like a weapon. Fragments of my nightmares, the swirling vortex of light and despair, flashed behind my eyes. I saw Elara, younger, her face etched with a pain I couldn't comprehend, struggling against something vast and terrible. And I saw myself, a child, reaching out, a conduit for something I didn’t yet grasp.
