Chapter 6
The Professor's Price
Desperate for answers, I sought out Professor Bradley. He’s slippery, dealing in secrets. He recognized the charm’s true name, hinting at its immense danger. He’ll help, but his price is always steep.
The alley reeked of stale ale and something vaguely metallic, a scent that clung to the damp cobblestones like a shroud. Rain slicked the narrow passage, reflecting the weak glow of a distant gas lamp in fractured, oily rainbows. My cloak, heavy with moisture, clung to my shoulders, a poor defense against the chill that had nothing to do with the weather. I clutched the charm, its smooth, cool surface a familiar weight against my palm, a constant reminder of the impossible path unfurling before me. Professor Bradley. Even his name felt like a whispered incantation, a key to doors best left unopened. But Elara was gone, and the Obsidian Hand was breathing down my neck. I had no other choice.
I found his establishment tucked away behind a crumbling facade, a discreet sign – a stylized owl with an open book – barely visible through the grime. The door, surprisingly, creaked open at my touch, revealing a space that defied its grimy exterior. Bookshelves, crammed with tomes of every conceivable size and age, lined the walls, reaching towards a ceiling lost in shadow. The air inside was thick with the scent of aged paper, exotic incense, and something that hinted at forgotten laboratories. It was a sanctuary for knowledge, a den of whispers.
Professor Bradley himself was a study in contradictions. He was a small man, his frame almost bird-like, but his eyes, sharp and intelligent, missed nothing. They darted over me the moment I entered, cataloging my damp clothes, my anxious posture, the subtle tremor in my hands. He sat hunched over a cluttered desk, quill scratching furiously across a parchment, his brow furrowed in concentration. A single, flickering candle cast dancing shadows that distorted his features, making him seem both ancient and ageless.
