Her eyes, usually so clear and steady, would sometimes flicker away when mine met them, a fleeting uncertainty that pricked at my own unease.
We sat in her study, the air thick with the scent of dried herbs and old parchment. The map, the one Bradley had so cryptically provided, lay spread between us, its faded lines a testament to journeys long past. My fingers traced the intricate whorls and sigils, a strange familiarity stirring within me, a resonance that went deeper than mere academic interest. It was as if the ink itself whispered forgotten languages into my mind, fragments of a knowledge I’d never consciously possessed.
“You’ve been quiet, Elara,” I said, my voice softer than I’d intended. The silence between us had stretched, punctuated only by the crackle of the hearth and the rustle of her turning pages.
