The air in the old observatory hung thick with the scent of dust and forgotten starlight. Alex, heart thumping a frantic rhythm against their ribs, traced a faint, almost invisible line on the antique map. This was it. The ‘X’ marked not just a spot, but a convergence, a point where their absurd quest for a soulmate, guided by a cryptic, ink-stained enigma, was supposed to reach its zenith. Beside them, Jamie, bless their sarcastic, coffee-scented soul, was leaning against a derelict telescope, looking for all the world like a particularly handsome gargoyle contemplating the existential dread of a pigeon.

"So," Jamie drawled, their voice a low rumble that always managed to cut through Alex’s internal monologue of panic and possibility. "Is this the spot where Prince Charming is supposed to emerge from a celestial cloud, or are we just here to admire the cobwebs?"

Alex bristled, though the familiar sting was softened by a growing, unacknowledged fondness. "It's an observatory, Jamie. A place for observing the cosmos. And according to this," Alex tapped the map with a trembling finger, "this particular spot, marked by this rather peculiar constellation of smudges, is… important."
