A Compass of Confusion

The map's clues lead Alex and Jamie on a wild goose chase through the city. Their shared predicament breeds a unique camaraderie, filled with laughter and Alex's signature awkwardness.

The faded ink on the map seemed to mock Alex. "A sundial's shadow at the hour of the forgotten king," Alex read aloud, the words tasting like dust and disappointment. They were perched on the edge of a ridiculously ornate fountain in Willow Creek Park, a place Alex had only ever associated with aggressively cheerful toddlers and pigeons with questionable hygiene. The sundial, a relic from some long-forgotten civic pride project, stood stoically in the center of the park, its gnomon casting a long, thin shadow. The sun, however, was a fickle mistress today, hiding behind a thick blanket of clouds like a shy child.

"Forgotten king, huh?" Jamie’s voice, smooth as perfectly frothed milk, cut through Alex’s internal monologue of doom. They leaned against a nearby oak tree, arms crossed, an eyebrow arched with that familiar, infuriatingly charming skepticism. "Sounds like a Tuesday. Especially in this city. We’ve got more forgotten royalty than actual functioning plumbing.”

Alex huffed, pulling their worn tweed jacket tighter. "It's not funny, Jamie. This was supposed to be a significant marker. The map is very specific about the 'hour of the forgotten king'." They gestured wildly at the sky. "Which, coincidentally, is apparently whenever the sun decides to grace us with its presence."
