The dust motes danced in the afternoon sunbeams slanting through the window of Alex’s apartment, each one a tiny, glittering testament to the passage of time. Time that, until recently, Alex had felt was slipping through their fingers like fine grains of sand, leaving them resolutely, spectacularly single. But now, the sand felt different. It was less a sign of loss and more like… well, like the grit of a new adventure, clinging to the soles of their very sensible, map-patterned sneakers.

Beside them, perched precariously on a stack of antique atlases, sat Jamie. Their elbow rested on Alex’s shoulder, a gesture so casual it felt like a brand new, exhilarating landmark on the map of Alex’s personal geography. Jamie was fiddling with a faded, leather-bound notebook, their brow furrowed in that way Alex was coming to find utterly endearing, a charmingly sarcastic crinkle that usually preceded a witty observation.

“So,” Jamie began, their voice a low rumble that vibrated pleasantly against Alex’s ear, “are we officially retiring the ‘Quest for the Soulmate’ from the expedition’s itinerary, or is it just being… temporarily rerouted?”
