The air in the old observatory buzzed, not with the hum of ancient machinery, but with the frantic energy of Alex’s own rapidly beating heart. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy dome, illuminating the very spot where, according to the map’s latest, maddeningly vague inscription, "the stars align with memory." Alex, armed with a flashlight that cast a wavering beam like a nervous firefly, squinted at the celestial charts plastered on the curved walls. This was it. The culmination of weeks of bumbling through forgotten parks, deciphering cryptic rhymes about pigeons, and accidentally crashing a local historical society’s bake sale.
And there, leaning against a behemoth of a telescope that looked like it could personally nudge a planet off its orbit, was Jamie. They were, as usual, infuriatingly present. This time, however, they weren't holding a coffee cup, but a small, leather-bound journal, its pages dog-eared and filled with a spidery script.
“Fancy meeting you here, Alex,” Jamie said, their voice a low drawl that always managed to sound both bored and amused. “Lost your bearings again?”
