The air in the grand hall hummed with a thousand polite conversations, a symphony of clinking glasses and carefully curated laughter. I, Elara Vance, was a part of it, a perfectly placed note in the melody, or so I tried to be. Tonight, I was embodying ‘The Accomplished Hostess,’ a role I’d practiced in front of the mirror until my reflection seemed like a stranger. My smile was a practiced curve, my gestures measured, my words a carefully chosen vocabulary of pleasantries. Marcus Bellweather, a man whose very presence seemed to exude the crisp scent of polished wood and unshakeable certainty, beamed at me from across the room. Each persona was a temporary skin, shed as soon as the applause faded, leaving me feeling more naked than before.

The weight of the velvet dress felt like a physical burden, pressing down on my chest. My smile, once a fleeting, genuine thing, had become a permanent fixture, a mask that was starting to crack under the strain. A particularly boisterous laugh erupted nearby, and I flinched, the sound jarring against the carefully constructed harmony. It was a reminder of the genuine effervescence I felt I lacked, the effortless joy that seemed to come so naturally to others.
