The air in the dusty antique shop hung thick with the scent of old paper and forgotten stories, a perfume that always made my breath catch. It was a place I often escaped to, a labyrinth of forgotten treasures where the weight of my own unremarkable existence felt a little lighter. Today, however, the usual comforting hum of the shop was punctuated by a new presence. He sat by a cluttered table near the back, a man with eyes that seemed to hold the quiet wisdom of ancient trees and hands that moved with the deliberate grace of a calligrapher. His name, I would soon learn, was Silas Thorne.
I was tracing the faded lines of a celestial map, its constellations a familiar comfort, when a voice, gentle as a rustling leaf, spoke beside me. "Looking for a new destination, are we?"
I started, my fingers flinching away from the parchment. He was older, with a kind of rumpled elegance, his tweed jacket dotted with what looked like flecks of dried ink. His smile was a soft curve, and his eyes, the color of warm amber, held a spark of knowing amusement.
