The polished oak of Marcus Bellweather’s desk gleamed under the harsh, efficient light of his office. It was a room that spoke of order, of things neatly categorized and filed away, much like, Elara suspected, Marcus viewed the world and everyone in it. He sat behind it, a man carved from sensible granite, his tie a precise knot, his gaze steady and unwavering. He was explaining, with the gentle but unyielding patience of someone explaining gravity to a falling leaf, the importance of her role.

“Elara,” he began, his voice smooth as river stones, “we’ve discussed this. Your position here is vital. It requires focus, a certain… dedication to the established parameters.” He gestured vaguely with a hand that seemed incapable of an imprecise movement. “This constant flitting from one interest to another, it’s… disruptive.”

Disruptive. Elara felt a familiar prickle of defensiveness, a small, caged bird rattling its bars. She’d come to Marcus’s office hoping, perhaps foolishly, for some understanding. He was, after all, a figure of some authority, someone who presumably saw the bigger picture. But his bigger picture seemed to be a monochrome sketch, devoid of the vibrant, chaotic hues that swirled within her.
