The world, which had once felt like a series of ill-fitting costumes and borrowed voices, began to soften at the edges. It wasn’t a dramatic shift, no sudden sunrise bursting through storm clouds, but rather a gentle unfurling, like a map slowly revealing its hidden landscapes. The restless yearning that had gnawed at me, the constant whisper of ‘what if I were someone else,’ had begun to quiet, replaced by a nascent hum of possibility. It was a melody I hadn’t heard before, one composed not of imitation, but of my own quiet notes.
I found myself drawn to the familiar comfort of Silas’s little shop, not with the frantic urgency of a lost traveler, but with the quiet anticipation of someone returning home. The air, thick with the scent of aged paper and ink, felt like a balm. Silas was hunched over a counter, a magnifying glass held close to a delicate, hand-drawn celestial chart. He looked up as the bell above the door chimed, his eyes, kind and ancient, crinkling at the corners.
“Elara,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “You have the look of someone who has found a new constellation in their sky.”
