The crisp autumn air, usually a bracing tonic, felt heavy, like a damp wool blanket. Elara had spent the morning in a quiet rebellion, not with grand gestures or shouts, but with the simple act of choosing a different path. Instead of the usual route to the library, where Marcus Bellweather expected to find her poring over ledgers and client files, she’d taken a detour through the old botanical gardens.
