Chapter 12
Silas's Gentle Guidance
Silas encourages Elara to trust her intuition and explore her inner landscape. He provides tools, not answers, for her journey.
The scent of old paper and something akin to dried lavender always hung in Silas Thorne’s small shop, a comforting, dusty perfume that felt like a secret whispered just for me. Today, it was particularly potent, wrapping around me like a familiar shawl as I sat across from him, a cup of chamomile tea steaming between us. The late afternoon sun, softened by the grimy panes of his window, cast long, dancing shadows across the shelves crammed with atlases, globes, and volumes bound in leather that looked as ancient as the stories they held.
“You are looking for a destination, Elara,” Silas said, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder on a summer night. He wasn’t looking at me, but at a faded celestial map unfurled on his workbench, his long, nimble fingers tracing the constellations. “But you are so busy consulting the maps of others, you forget to look at your own internal compass.”
I stirred my tea, the spoon clinking softly against the ceramic. “But Silas, the maps of others… they show places I’ve never been, lives I’ve never lived. They seem so much more vibrant, so much more *real* than this one.” My voice felt small, a fragile thing in the quiet of his shop. The borrowed personalities, the fleeting interests – they were like ill-fitting clothes, beautiful in their own right, but never quite settling on my skin. I’d tried on the bohemian artist, the sharp-witted scholar, the free-spirited traveler, but each time, the reflection staring back from the mirror felt like a stranger wearing my face.
