To protect Elara and her mission, Silas makes a profound sacrifice, drawing the Echo's attention and buying her precious time, leaving her with his legacy.

The air in Silas’s observatory, usually thick with the scent of aged parchment and the faint metallic tang of cosmic dust, now hummed with a new, brittle tension. Outside, the sky bled a bruised twilight, the stars mere pinpricks against an encroaching, velvet darkness. Elara stood by the great telescope, its brass gleaming dully in the scant light, her fingers tracing the cool metal. Beside her, Silas, his ancient eyes like chips of obsidian, watched the swirling patterns of dust motes caught in a stray shaft of moonlight.

“It comes,” Silas’s voice was a dry rustle, like leaves skittering across stone. “The Echo. It senses the work. It senses you.”

Elara’s breath hitched. She had felt it too, a growing pressure in the periphery of her senses, a cold dread that had nothing to do with the chill of the mountain air. It was a gnawing emptiness, a void that swallowed sound, warmth, and feeling. The Echo. The embodiment of all that was lost, all that was fractured.
