Chapter 5

Crossing the Threshold: Ethics, Doubt, and the First Human Bridge

The team prepares for the imminent ethics review and first-in-human trial, navigating technical, safety, and ethical questions. Marcus Bellweather completes final assessments, Dr. Hanson confronts lingering biocompatibility concerns, and Dr. Thorne faces skepticism from the review board. Tensions rise as external scrutiny increases, the team refines their protocol, and the fate of the project hangs on a forthcoming pivotal decision.

The questions sharpened as the preclinical review panel convened. Would the 3D Carbon Nanotube-Fullerene Hyper-Lattice truly bridge a human spinal cord, or would it falter where biology proved most unforgiving? The application was out of the team’s hands, but the uncertainty was not.

Marcus Bellweather arrived early for his final round of clinical assessments—reflex tests, skin checks, cognitive screens. The research nurse explained each step, ticking boxes with practiced care. Marcus’s dry wit surfaced as the examiner asked about risks he’d be willing to accept. "If you say ‘spontaneous superpowers,’ I’ll sign right now," he quipped, but his eyes gave away the tremor of hope under the humor. Each answer mapped the tightrope between desire and reality: the chance to walk again, weighed against unknowns.

Dr. Lena Hanson worked late, eyes fixed on slides of tissue samples from the last rat cohort. She saw what the regulators would see—pockets of inflammation, astrocyte scars, the rare but alarming sign of foreign body response. Each image forced a hard look at the lattice’s promise and its peril. She drafted yet another revision to the protocol, specifying slower lattice resorption rates and new surface coatings, measures to coax the body’s acceptance. "We will not rush this," she reminded Thorne, her tone leaving no room for argument.
