Eleanor adjusted the familiar brim of her cap, the worn fabric a comforting weight against her brow. The school hallway hummed with the usual cacophony of slamming lockers and boisterous laughter, a soundscape that had always made her feel like a ghost drifting through. But today, something felt different. The usual knot of anxiety in her stomach had loosened, replaced by a quiet hum of anticipation. She was no longer content to fade into the background.

Across the crowded corridor, the New Student’s eyes met hers, a spark of recognition passing between them. They offered a small, encouraging smile, and Eleanor felt a warmth bloom in her chest. It was a feeling she was only just beginning to understand – the feeling of being seen. For so long, her cap had been her shield, a barrier between her and the overwhelming world. Now, it felt more like a lens, focusing her attention, sharpening her senses. The whispers that had once unnerved her now seemed like faint echoes, clues to a puzzle she was finally ready to solve.

Later, during lunch, Eleanor sat at her usual solitary table in the corner of the cafeteria. The New Student, who had been chatting animatedly with a group of other students, detached themselves and walked over, a tray laden with food. They slid onto the bench opposite Eleanor, their presence a welcome disruption.
